My Story

Hock Ng

My journey into innovation began at the intersection of materials science and electrical engineering. After graduating with a Ph.D., I started my career at Bell Labs as a researcher working on advanced semiconductor materials and devices—exploring how engineered materials can be harnessed for optical devices that power our modern world.

This foundation in semiconductor research later sparked my curiosity about how physical systems could interact with digital intelligence. I found myself drawn to the emerging field of physical computing, where sensors, devices, and real-world data converge with computational systems.

My path eventually led me to work on a variety of projects focusing on sensor fusion, computer vision, data visualization, and pervasive computing. I discovered the power of combining diverse technologies—bringing together hardware, software, and AI to solve complex problems that no single discipline could tackle alone.

Over time, I realized that many businesses struggle to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and practical applications. The worlds of advanced AI and data science remained inaccessible to organizations that could benefit most from them.

This realization led me to found Octopus Innovation Partners—a consultancy dedicated to making AI innovation accessible to businesses of all sizes. Like the octopus with its eight arms, I reach across multiple domains from AI strategy to data analytics to hands-on workshops—helping companies turn visionary ideas into tangible solutions.
